POACHING A TIGER AND A PEACOCK(Part-1)

By M. Kamal Naidu

On 18th July 1975 when Mr A.H.Moosvi, DFO Hyderabad Division was busy at his office, he received a telephone call at around 4.30 PM.  The call was from an unknown person informing about a tiger kill.  The informant never revealed his identity, but stated that one Masiuddin Farooqui had killed a tiger at Mannanur, in Amarabad Reserve Forest, and that it was being skinned at his residence right at that moment.

Mr Moosvi immediately called for Mr.Buchiram Reddy, ACF and Mr. Santokh Singh, RO, two Foresters, and two contractors who happened to be there in the office premises for participating in auctions of M.F.P. Mr. Moosvi along with all these persons proceeded to the address given by the informant in Tolichowki locality, then a very desolate area, with few scattered houses, very isolated with sprawling compounds, where the rich and the elite resided.

On reaching the given address, they entered through the gate and found people sitting outside.  Mr Masiuddin himself was present; he enquired as to what they wanted.  He was informed about the information, and the need to know the truth.  The information was confirmed without any resistance or hesitation.  Therefore there was no need to serve a search warrant under Sec. 50 (8) (a) of Wildlife Protection Act of 1972 and Sec. 62 (i) (a) (i) of AP Forest Act of 1967.  Mr Masiuddin permitted them to see for themselves the tiger skin which had been salted and kept aside.  The viscera, etc. were lying scattered about, along with some feathers of a peacock, and pieces of a here was put inside a pot ready for cooking.

Mr Masiuddin did not deny possession, as everything was very clearly visible, and was present right inside the house.  Mr Toucher, the renowned Taxidermist of Hyderabad was also present there, having just completed his job of skinning the tiger, and doing the request of Mr. Masiuddin.  There was few other youngsters present, who had accompanied in the Shikar.  Everyone was tired, and proud at their prized trophy.
