  NEWS AND NOTES(part-4)

A. Ban the Bulb in India

In India the lighting sector accounts for 28%  of all residential electricity consumption, the majority of which is taken up by in efficient lighting options despite more efficient alternatives existing.  If 450 millions incandescent bulbs in India were to be replaced by CFL, we would be saving 12000 MW of energy, which will reduce carbon emission by 95 million tons.  This is 4% of India’s annual carbon dioxide emission.

B.  Paper from elephant dung

HATHI CHAPP is a brand name of a particular kind of the paper that is not just handmade, but it is made by elephant poo.  The paper, probably one of the most ecologically safe papers to make and use, comes in many bright colors and does not sinks.  For one, you don’t cut trees.  All you do is waiting for the elephant to finish it 250 kg meal, digest it and drop 100 Kgs of dung.  Then you collect the poo, use water to remove nutrients from it (use this nutrient-rich water as manure) and convert the fibrous waste to beautiful paper!  The paper can be colored any shade, though the original color of the paper depends what the elephant’s diet on the day was.
