NATIONAL PARKS- EAST AFRICA

By M. Padmanabha Reddy

The first day lecture class in Forest College, Coimbatore in the year 1964 was an eventful day in my life.  In spite of heavy ragging the previous day the mind was fresh to receive the lecture on forestry in general and the lofty trees and abundant wildlife areas of the world.  A bus passes through a trunk of a tree and millions of wild beasts and Zebras migrate from one country to other in search of green pasture, are the two things in the lecture that fascinated me.  For the first few days of the training I was struggling to imagine a bus passing through a tree trunk and the annual migration of wild animals.  Finally I have made peace with my imagination by resolving to visit these places in my life time.  On completion of training and after joining the department the life was routine and mechanical.  Many a times I was busy and under stress without turning out any productive work.  As the time passed the imagination of lofty trees and migration of millions of wild animal took the back seat and slowly faded away from the memory.  After retirement one day I was watching the T.V. channel “Animal planet” where annual migration of millions of wild animals from Serengeti national park to Masai Mara Nation Park was shown.  Immediately as a flash back, the first day lecture class of Forest College and my promise to m self came alive.  In the year 2004 I visited my son in California and during my stay there I made it a point to visit Red wood forests.  I was amazed to see huge trees of thousands of years old.  The promise which I made to myself was thus half fulfilled.  Now the second wish was to visit East Africa and see the world famous Serengeti, Tarangini and Masai Mara wild life sanctuaries.  It so happened that one of my friend had a World Bank assignment in East Africa.  He invited me to join in the four.  Along with another friend three of us went to East Africa to see the Nature reserves there(Contd…Part-2)
